Mid Devon Bat Survey

June 27, 2019 HannahMaben DevonEcologist

Seasons Ecology’s Mid Devon team is based just off the M5’s J27 and has been operating since August 2012.  We have extensive experience of undertaking robust yet cost effective bat surveys throughout Devon.  We primarily undertake bat surveys to inform and support planning applications (barn conversions, extensions and demolition) and/or listed building works, but also for management and educational purposes.

Clients who have benefitted from our Mid Devon bat survey services include Devon County Council, Exmoor National Park Authority, National Trust and Blackdown Hills AONB as well as numerous private companies and homeowners.

Please contact us for a FREE proposal for a bat survey to support your project

Preliminary bat roost assessment: Our initial bat surveys are led by experienced bat ecologists and holders of appropriate bat licences (Natural England Class 1 or Class 2 licences).  The aim of this survey is to assess the suitability of a structure to support roosting bats and to search for evidence of bats.  Based on the findings of this assessment further surveys may be recommended to characterise the roost.

Bat emergence / re-entry surveys: Confirmed bat roosts require further surveys to characterise the roost.  These bat surveys aim to establish further information such as the species of bat, number of roosting bats and access points.

Bat activity surveys: We frequently undertake both manual and automated bat activity surveys to identify key foraging and commuting corridors for bat species.

DNA genotyping: Where necessary a sample of bat droppings is sent off to a laboratory for analysis to confirm the species of bat present.  This is only required where it is not possible to identify species from the emergence / re-entry surveys.

Bat mitigation: Seasons Ecology’s bat specialist have over 20 years’ experience of designing bat mitigation.  We first consider avoidance options and where this is not possible we identify pragmatic mitigation that can be incorporated into the design.

Bat licences: Seasons Ecology’s bat specialists have acted as the Named Ecologist and successfully obtained several Natural England bat mitigation licences (A13) since 2007.  We are also able to register sites under Natural England’s Bat Mitigation Class Licence (WML-CL21; Annex B, C and D).

Bat monitoring: Where required we are able to undertake monitoring to assess the success of mitigation provided and we use our results to inform on-going avoidance and mitigation design.
