Senior Ecologist (with a focus on bats)

August 3, 2018 HannahMaben DevonEcological ConsultancyEcologistJobs

Senior Ecologist (with a focus on bats).  Permanent post.  Part-time (salary pro-rata) and/or flexible working possible for the right candidate.  Tiverton based.  £25k to £32k

A significant amount of our work relates to bats.  In 2017 the two Partners acted as the Named Ecologists on 16 EPS licences in respect to bats and we are currently working on a nationally important site that supports 19% of the UK breeding population of greater horseshoe bats.

Whilst this position is largely to lead, manage and develop bat related work within the business there is a requirement for the successful candidate to manage and input into a range of ecological projects.  As such applicants should have broad knowledge, understanding and practical experience relating to all aspects of ecological consultancy.  Candidates must have appropriate qualifications (to include a Natural England Class 2 bat licence) and experience (including acting as the Named Ecologist on mitigation licences), proven project management skills and great communication skills.

Knowledge and experience

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in ecological/environmental consultancy
  • Competence in designing, quoting for, planning and undertaking preliminary bat roost assessments, emergence/re-entry bat surveys, bat activity surveys (transects and static) and hibernation surveys (including risk assessments and method statements)
  • Competence in scoping, designing, quoting for and implementing a range of other ecological surveys
  • Competence in undertaking bat sound analysis using Analook and/or other software
  • Experience of compiling and managing Natural England bat mitigation licences in respect to development
  • Compiling, reviewing and approving quotes and technical reports for pre and post planning purposes, including EcIAs
  • Competence in providing Ecological Toolbox Talks and working as Ecological Clerk of Works and licensed bat handler on construction sites
  • Experience at working alone and as part of a team, including managing staff and sub-contractors
  • Experience of providing training to assistant ecologists and other staff particularly in bat survey methods and sound analysis

Qualifications and certifications

Successful applicants should have:

  • A relevant BSc or MSc
  • A Natural England Class 2 licence (or above)
  • A Natural England Bat Low Impact Class Licence
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Full UK driving licence and car insured for business use

It would also be beneficial to have the following;

  • CSCS card
  • Associate or full membership of CIEEM
  • NRW bat licence
  • Botanical skills
  • Barn owl licence and/or other protected species licences

The role will require travel throughout the UK.  Some night work will be required, but the post will be supported by other ecologists and sub-contractors.
