Bat Ecologist – We’re Recruiting

May 11, 2021 HannahMaben DevonEcologistSomerset

Seasons Ecology established in 2012 and specialises in ecological surveys, impact assessments and mitigation design and implementation largely to inform and support planning applications and construction projects.   We are a small, friendly team operating out of two offices in the south-west – Wiveliscombe and Bath in Somerset.

A significant amount of our work relates to bats. In 2020/2021 the two Directors acted as the Named Ecologists on more than 25 EPS licences in respect to bats and we are currently working on a nationally important site that supports 19% of the UK breeding population of greater horseshoe bats. To improve the efficiency of this important service and enable the Directors to focus on other areas of the business we are looking for an experienced bat ecologist to join our team.

Whilst this position is largely to lead, manage and develop bat related work within the business there is a requirement for the successful candidate to manage and input into a range of ecological projects. As such applicants should have broad knowledge, understanding and practical experience relating to all aspects of ecological consultancy. Candidates must have appropriate qualifications (to include a Natural England Class 2 bat licence) and experience (including acting as the Named Ecologist and/or Accredited Agent on mitigation licences), proven project management skills and great communication skills.

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in ecological/environmental consultancy.
  • Understanding of seasonal considerations, planning and licensing timescales with the ability to effectively manage and communicate these to clients and contractors to inform project programming and manage expectations.
  • Competence in providing Ecological Toolbox Talks and working as Ecological Clerk of Works and licensed bat handler on construction sites.
  • Expertise in planning and undertaking preliminary bat roost assessments, emergence/re-entry bat surveys, bat activity surveys (transects and static) and hibernation surveys (including risk assessments and method statements).
  • Managing systems to ensure timely implementation of licenses along with required monitoring and reporting.
  • Experience at working alone and as part of a team, including managing staff and sub-contractors.
  • Competence in undertaking bat sound analysis using Analook and/or other software.
  • Experience of providing training to assistant ecologists and other staff particularly in bat survey methods and sound analysis.

Desirable (particularly for the higher salary)

  • Experience of compiling and managing Natural England bat mitigation licences in respect to development.
  • Compiling, reviewing and approving quotes and technical reports for pre and post planning purposes.
  • Competence in scoping, designing, quoting for and implementing a range of other ecological surveys.
  • Line management experience

Qualifications and certifications

Successful applicants should have:

  • A Natural England Class 2 licence (or above)
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Associate or full membership of CIEEM
  • A relevant BSc or MSc
  • Full UK driving licence and car insured for business use

It would also be beneficial to have the following;

  • BMCL registered consultant
  • CSCS card
  • NRW bat licence
  • Barn owl licence and/or other protected species licences
  • Botanical skills

The role will require travel throughout the UK with the majority being in Somerset and Devon. Some night work will be required, but the post will be supported by other ecologists.

Salary £25k to £30k depending on experience. Permanent post. Applicants for a part-time (salary pro-rata) or full-time role will be considered – please specify preference on application.  Remote working, but with Wiveliscombe office base.

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to moira.allwood@seasonsecology.co.uk
